"Celebrating Women Volunteers: Insights & Inspiration" series.
Interview with Zdenka de Booij about her volunteer experience.
At BeeQueen, our mission is to empower and uplift women, fostering a more inclusive and equal world. We believe that women's voices and contributions should be celebrated and heard.
That's why we've launched the 'Celebrating Women Volunteers' interview series, dedicated to showcasing the remarkable journeys of women volunteers who devote their time and efforts to make a positive impact in various organizations. We hope to inspire others by showcasing their stories through these interviews.
We are honored to introduce our first guest, Zdenka de Booij, who kindly shared her experiences.
“Volunteering allows me to connect with like-minded individuals who share my values and interests.”
Background and interests
Zdenka has been working in the fields of technology, data analysis, and online marketing for several years. She has lived in Amsterdam for 14 years and is a proud mother of a seven-year-old son. Her interests include volunteering for Women in AI, traveling, and sports. Zdenka`s ambitions and passions are to develop herself further in the technology and AI industries.
How did you first get involved in volunteering, and what organizations or causes have you been a part of?
— A few years ago, I was thinking about a career switch, and I was wondering what could help me gain new skills, network, and experience. When exploring different possibilities, I decided to join Women in Tech NL. Their mission and vision were very close to my purpose. Now, several years later, I’ve met many incredible women who inspire me and are there for me when I reach out.
“Volunteering for different organizations and causes allows me to explore my interests and passions while also providing flexibility in how I choose to give back.”
What drives you to volunteer for different organizations and causes?
— I enjoy the variety of experiences and opportunities that come with volunteering in diverse settings. I have volunteered at Women in Tech, marketing organizations, and currently at Women in AI. Volunteering for different organizations and causes allows me to explore my interests and passions while also providing flexibility in how I choose to give back.
What was a particularly challenging or controversial experience you've encountered during your volunteer work?
— When you are a volunteer, your time availability can differ from time to time. Sometimes you can contribute more, and sometimes not at all. It is important that you communicate properly with your team what your possibilities are and not let others in the lurch. If you made your commitments, you should try to deliver. On the other hand, the team members should also understand when your priorities or life situation change. I have experienced a few times that tensions occurred due to a lack of communication or too high expectations.
What have been the most rewarding moments in your volunteer journey?
— I have volunteered as a mentor for a marketing educational organization. Here, I helped my mentee build up her startup in e-commerce and digital marketing. When the mentoring program stopped after several months, my mentee was up and running with her business. Her gratitude and appreciation she shared with the community were the best reward and recognition for me. It also helped me believe in myself and my knowledge.
“Volunteering is often something I love to do, but it does not pay my bills, so I have to set priorities.”
How do you balance your commitment to various volunteer roles with other aspects of your life?
— That can be difficult sometimes. You can volunteer at different organizations or communities at the same time, but if you see a clash of interests or that you are not able to deliver what you promised or what is expected, then my advice is to step back. Quality above quantity also applies here.
What valuable insights or lessons have you gained from your diverse volunteer experiences?
— Volunteering allows me to connect with like-minded individuals who share my values and interests. The opportunity to build meaningful relationships and a sense of community is a motivating factor for volunteering.
A piece of advice you'd like to share with others who are thinking about volunteering?
— Just do it! Volunteering provides opportunities for personal growth and development, and so it did for me. If you are driven by learning new skills, gaining experience in different areas, and broadening your perspectives, then volunteering is definitely something for you!
